i read somewhere that granite blasted from the sides of this mountain was used to build the brooklyn bridge.

a week after the opening of the bridge in 1883, a wave of fear that it might collapse caused a stampede that left 12 people trampled to death.

in 1884, P.T. Barnum (of Barnum & Bailey) led Jumbo, and a parade of 21 other elephants across the bridge. this helped to settle any doubts in the bridge’s stability.
