teolocholco tlaxcala carnaval
tlaxcala, mexico: settled by an indigenous nahua people in the 14th century, it rivaled with the aztec city of tenochtitlan. though the aztecs managed to build the largest empire in mesoamerica, they were unsuccessful in their quest to conquer tlaxcala. this led the city to economic isolation, with severed trades for goods with neighboring cities. it also resulted in constant warfare with the mexica (the pre-columbian, indigenous people of mexico).
evenutually, tlaxcala rallied with hernan cortes and his spanish army - and defeated the aztec leader, montezuma II.
